In reflecting on this DVD of sacred arias, it is significant that Andrea Bocelli chose Rome's Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, as the setting for his concert. Performed in honour of Jubilee 2000, marking the anniversary of Christ's birth, Bocelli's programme captured not only the thrilling display of operatic arias but also the composer's deepest spiritual feelings.

The concert is a reminder that one of most eloquent ways mankind has found to praise the Creator and offer thanks for life and the bounty of this earth has been though song. One of the oldest of these is an 'Ave Maria' by Giulio Caccini, which is heard, in a moving new setting by contemporary composer Steven Mercurio. The second setting of the 'Ave Maria' is the renowned version created by French composer Charles Gounod. A third 'Ave Maria' in this program – by Schubert – is sung in Italian.
