“SA PARTY” is a collection of local music that grabbed the ears, hearts and attention of South Africans over almost 4 decades – during the good, bad & ugly times in our turbulent history. As a result, artists of colour are represented only by the handful of black artists who were enjoying commercial pop appeal during the apartheid years – such as the magnificent Margaret Singana of Ipi Tombi & Shaka Zulu fame – through to the more current Mandoza. From the perfect pure pop confection of “Mammy Blue”, though more pioneering sounds such as eVoid, PJ Powers and The Julian Laxton Band, to the African and Afrikaans successes of Singana, Blk Sonshine and Lloyd Ross, Kurt Darren and Billy Forrest – it’s all here, in it’s quirky, confused, painful and sometimes joyous glory. Rabbitt rocked the nation with “Charlie”… and decades later Wonderboom did the same thing – with the same song - and so we open & close the album with them.
This is an important slice of history in the musical growth of South Africa.
