  Masterful Mania!

Having seen the show in London and here, being a huge ABBA fan I was skeptical if the music to the music will be any good. Then again can you really mess up with these masterful songs? I needed to have worried. This is a beautiful rendition of ABBA songs - you can hear Benny & Bjorns influence. This is not just copies but renditions that can stand on there own. ABBA will always be the masters but these songs are done as a soundtrack and it’s wonderfully fun and very entertaining – and before you know it you will be singing along! Masterfully done a MUST for all ABBA fans! Now you’ll have to excuse me – I need to listen to it again

A GREAT SOUNDTRACK TO A "FEEL GOOD MOVIE"
Reviewed by C. Van Straaten from Berario, Johannesburg on 02 September 2008
182 of 408 people found the following review helpful:

I'm certainly pleasantly surprised with this soundtrack - as vocalists, most of the lead actors shine as brilliantly as their acting skills. Notably Meryl Streep performs a superb rendition of "The Winner Takes It All" and emphasises the song's pathos of heartbreak and loss masterfully. Similarly, "Slipping Through My Fingers", is a stand-out track as the quintessential wonderment and sadness of mother-sees-daughter-leave-the-nest are brought to life by Streep's understated performance. The re-arrangements of many of the ABBA classics (and a few lesser known ones such as "When All Is Said & Done") expertly complement the context in which they appear in the movie. Don't expect carbon copies of the original ABBA recordings (you just don't mess with perfection and no-one but Agnetha & Frida would ever be able to emulate the original soaring vocal harmonies), but enjoy the musical type style in which they are so well presented. Pierce Brosnan brings star quality to the movie, but it was unwise to have him perform "S.O.S" : it simply falls flat when a male with a limited range (and a near growl for a singing voice) attempts a song written with a high (female) vocal range in mind - the effect of one of Benny & Bjorn's (and Stig Anderson's) pop masterpieces is thus ultimately diminished to a forgettable performance. Otherwise it's difficult to find fault with any of the other tracks, as it is with the movie, which would through its soundtrack welcomely bring the much loved catchy popsongs and timeless wistful ballads of the four 'Super Swedes' to a younger generation.
