Meesterlike MenslikheidReviewed by Neels van Tonder from Marikana, Suid-Afrika on 27 October 2007 306 of 514 people found the following review helpful: 'n Tydlose meesterstuk! In 2005 vir 'n Oscar genomineer as beste buitelandse rolprent. Ongetwyfeld "Gabriela's Song"! Moenie hierdie fliek mis nie. Jy gaan jammerlik op 'n grote uitmis. Was this review helpful?
Pure Heartshine!Reviewed by Ms Margaret Kollmer from Benoni on 08 January 2008 154 of 312 people found the following review helpful: Daniel Dareus, as the burnt out conductor, returns to his home village in Sweden and reluctantly, at first, becomes choir master to a mixed bunch of church goers. Childhood memories are painful and small town bigotry compounds some unhappy experiences.
Interwoven is his poignant joy in music which he is able to transmit and share with his enthusiastic bunch of choristers; extolling them to‘find their tone’ and 'open their hearts.'
The story is dazzling; exposing as it does both human frailty and triumph of spirit. I loved the cementing bond of beautiful music permeating the tale as well as the angelic solo he composed for one of his choristers.
Truly a brilliant movie; many layered, utterly charming and sincere and significant in today's seemingly blasé world.

Hoogs aanbeveel. Was this review helpful?

Absolutely stunning!Reviewed by Gail Malcomson from Pretoria, South Africa on 06 November 2007 182 of 406 people found the following review helpful: The movie tells the story of Daniel, the famous conductor, who returns to his hometown. He buys the old school house and tries to stay in the background, saying that he has just come to listen. But he is inexorably drawn into the lives of the villagers when he takes the job as cantor at the local church. His passion for making beautiful music and his compassion for human frailty draw out the weaknesses of those around him, but also give them the strength they need to, for example, leave an abusive husband. He falls in love with Lena, a local girl with the most amazing smile and personality, and although the ending is sad, it is triumphant! Was this review helpful?
As it is in HeavenReviewed by Andriette Du Plessis from Pretoria, South Africa on 23 October 2007 291 of 602 people found the following review helpful: A MUST for all human beings with a heart. Starts a bit slowly but worth every minute. Might be a bit liberal for some people off the old block. Message behind it all - timeless. Was this review helpful?
