On a desperate mission to save Planet Earth, Supergirl (Helen Slater), must retrieve a missing life-giving power source to save her home city from total destruction.
Startled by her own amazing Superpowers, Supergirl traces the lost Omegahedron only to discover that it has fallen into the hands of the rapacious Selena (Faye Dunaway) who unleashes untold horrors to thwart her young adversary. When Selena ensnares her brave opponent in the dreaded Phantom Zone, it seems that Supergirl's mission - and the Universe - are doomed...
Strength, flight, invincibility, heat vision, an unswerving sense of justice: they're all family traits. Kara, Superman's cousin, also survived the cataclysm that destroyed their homeworld of Krypton. And when she comes to Earth, she's Supergirl! Creative forces behind Superman: The Movie take another page from DC Comics lore with this fun and effects-packed adventure about the Girl Of Steel. Helen Slater plays the title role, posing as Midvale prep-schooler Linda Lee, battling a sorceress (Faye Dunaway) for control of an alien power orb and enjoying an unexpected dating ritual called kissing. Peter O'Toole and Mia Farrow add more starpower to the ultrapowered excitement. All you in Midvale and beyond, have no fear: Supergirl is here! - Commentary by Director Jeannot Swarc and Scott B

Magic?Reviewed by R.S. from KZN on 10 November 2007 156 of 318 people found the following review helpful: The amazing adventures we had with Superman were a natural motivator to try bring the stories of Supergirl to the big screen, but that was not enough to help this movie. While this DVD is a must for any serious collector of comic book related movies, the storyline is quite a let down for anyone who read the original comics. The fact that Supergirl doesn't get to use much of the amazing skills and powers that her cousin has is somewhat of a disappointment (and when she does, it's downplayed), but that's compounded by the fact that the story involves magical forces, rather than the conventional super-wealthy / superpowered nemesis of the Superman movies (and th Supergirl comics for that matter). Nevertheless, it was a well made movie for it's time, and the bonus commentary provides inside information on the choices they had to make in the filming of the movie, so it is partially explained.
