Brilliant movie...lacklustre features.Reviewed by Mr Jayneel Ramjee from Pretoria, South Africa on 28 May 2004 301 of 590 people found the following review helpful: The "Kill Bill" DVD has been given such strange treatment over the various continents that it's literally impossible to justify buying any of the different versions. What am I on about ? OK, here's the story.
The movie was released and we were all amazed.It was a fantastic Tarantino movie with a surprisingly minute plot, but contained stunning action-driven sequences throughout, each paying homage to popular 70s japanese culture...add to this the fact that it was also mindbendingly violent.Unfortunately, what we all saw was not the full picture.
The movie was released in Japan with around 1 minute extra footage and also had the entire "House of Blue Leaves" fight shown in colour. The reason ? Well, all the extra bits just added to the gore and carnage factor - and according to the producer, in terms of the US public's tolerance for violence, "Americans just can't take as much as the Japanese."
So, with this knowledge I would automatically recommend the Japanese R2 NTSC edition, which shows the movie in its complete entirety and includes far more extras than on the standard R1/R2/R3/R4 disc...however, this disc doesn't come with subtitles solely for the bits where there's japanese dialogue - you have to switch it on manually on your DVD player and switch it back off when the english dialogue resumes...which could become a bit distracting.
So, I can't make an exclusive recommendation. I'd say wait until the infinitely slower-paced but still excellent second volume is released, and get the special collector's edition / director's cut boxset. Nevertheless, if you're not a fanatic, this edition, despite lacking in extra features, does still contain an excellent edit of the movie which more than makes up for the DVD's shortcomings.
These are the extras on the standard edition : * The Making Of Kill Bill" * "The 5, 6, 7, 8's" videos :
- I Walk Like Jane Mansfield
- I'm Blue
* Bootleg Theatrical trailer
* Teaser trailer
* "Kill Bill, vol.2" teaser trailer Was this review helpful?
EXCELLENTReviewed by Kim on 18 November 2004 274 of 542 people found the following review helpful: It is a brilliant show with lots of action and outstanding performance by Uma Thurman and Lucy Lu. On the downside why did they have to make a sequel when they could have ended it in the first one? Was this review helpful?
