MAKES YOUR DAYReviewed by Mr Van Heerden Kritzinger on 08 June 2004 172 of 342 people found the following review helpful: The word "classic" gets used a lot in the film business.A classic movie does not neccessarily have to be the best, but must contribute something to the genre and must at the very least , be timeless.
This is excactly what Dirty Harry brings to the party. By today's standards it is not as action packed as say, Face off or Speed, but boy, did it shift the goal post in terms of Cop movies today.A great deal of movie heroes today have a little piece of Harry Callaghan in him and the timeless lines : "Do you feel lucky punk?" have been used, recycled and borrowed endlessly.
The premise is quite straight forward: A crazed killer by the name of Scorpio is on the loose in the streets of San Francisco. Harry Callaghan (Eastwood) is the strong, silent and maverick cop that is assigned to the investigation. The story as such is not groundbreaking, but considering it was made in the early 70's, it was(is ) considered as a poineering movie in the detective/cop genre (bell bottoms and side burns notwithstanding).
It is hard to imagine anyone else but Clint Eastwood portraying Callaghan and Eastwood does what he does best: Glare, sneer and makes his .44 Magnum do most of the negotiations.
The extra features on the DVD is great and the cast interviews makes for very interesting viewing.
Go ahead, make kalahari's day and buy this DVD......punk! Was this review helpful?
