The year is 1991, and Spud Milton’s long walk to manhood is still creeping along at an unnervingly slow pace. Approaching the ripe old age of fifteen and still with no signs of the much anticipated ball-drop, Spud is coming to terms with the fact that he may well be a freak of nature. With a mother hell-bent on emigrating, a father making a killing out of selling homemade moonshine, and a demented grandmother called Wombat, the new year seems to offer little except extreme embarrassment and more mortifying Milton madness. But Spud is returning to a boarding school where he is no longer the youngest or the smallest. His dormitory mates, known as the Crazy Eight, have an unusual new member and his house has a new clutch of first years (the Normal Seven). If Spud thinks his second year will be a breeze, however, he is seriously mistaken. He is soon beset with women trouble, coerced into misguided late night adventures, and finds his dreams of a famous career on the stage in tatters after landing the part of the Dove of Peace in a disastrous house play production of Noah’s Ark.
Hilarious, bitter-sweet, tragic and real, join Spud as he takes another tentative step forward while all around him the madness continues...
If anyone's capable of portraying hell, it's John Milton. In this case, hell is an elite, all-boys boarding school in Durban, South Africa, in 1990, and Milton is 13-year-old John Spud Milton, his nickname referring to the diminutive private parts of this preadolescent boy, an indicator of the level of humor and behavior (and privacy) at the school. Spud is a good guy, a companionable narrator whose journal captures his first year - classmates Mad Dog, Rambo, Gecko and Fatty, and teachers Sparerib, Viking and The Guv. Spud is a good observer and, unfortunately, his portrayal of boarding-school life rings true. A parallel story line - Nelson Mandela's release from prison - lends depth to Spud's tale as he begins to develop a social conscience. Some readers may tire of 300-plus pages of random acts of meanness and the parade of quirky characters, but those humored by it will be eager for the forthcoming sequel. A bestseller in South Africa, it's likely to be a hit with American readers as well. (Fiction. 12+) (Kirkus Reviews)

Good characters, poor storyReviewed by Spud fan from Cape Town on 03 May 2007 1257 of 2615 people found the following review helpful: It was great to hear from all the characters in Spuds life again.
Highlights:
-The Crazy 8 adventures
-More lunches with the Guv
-A gripping story to read, you always want to know more.
Negatives:
-To much bad language. This was a disappointment.
-A bit more focus on the romance of Spud, the relationships are hollow and missed sorely from 1990 Was this review helpful?
The Madness does ContinueReviewed by The Write Co (Amanda Patterson) from Sandton, South Africa on 27 April 2007 1175 of 2423 people found the following review helpful: John Milton aka Spud, returns to school. He approaches his 15th birthday, losing his girlfriend, The Mermaid, and acquiring another, Amanda. As if that isn't enough, his mother has decided that the family is emigrating. The Crazy 8 torment the new boys, struggle with rugby and cricket matches and generally create mayhem. Mad Dog forces Spud on a horrendous hike, and the Standard 6 oddball, Runt, stalks him. However, Verne, and the 8th member of group, Roger the cat, are the stars of this second book. I laughed out loud whilst my heart bled for him. The descriptions of him on the rugby field are inspirational to any wannabe writers of comedy.I bet you want to know what happens next. Buy it. Read it. You won't be sorry.

And so the story continuesReviewed by Harold from Johannesburg, South Africa on 04 June 2007 956 of 1982 people found the following review helpful: Wickedly funny and true to the title. Spud, 14, going on 15 returns for 2nd year. Now faced with more problems and peer pressure. His mom, a raving mad woman, his dad still selling moonshine and Wombat (same old self). A Green Station Wagon, a trip to London and a reunion. What more can one say. The Crazy 8, and a fresh 1st year dorm. Spud finds himself in shambles after multiple let-downs and then, Puberty... Great read and cannot wait to read, with what seems, the changes in his life, (hopefully) a 3rd instalment of Spud. Want a good laugh? Go on, buy the book. Was this review helpful?
