Be your own bodyguard is a manual of practical advice on how to live safely and with minimum anxiety in a society which is pervaded by crime. “Be your own Bodyguard” is a survivor’s guide to life in South Africa viewed from the perspective of an expert – an award winning police reservist and security specialist. Crammed not only with expert advice on how best to protect yourself and your loved ones and how to ensure that your property remains safely in your possession, it is also full of gripping real-life accounts and anecdotes pertaining to streetlife. The reader is shown cameos from real crimes to illustrate the wisdom of the advice being given in a manner which is not only interesting, but wryly takes a look at what being a South African means. This account is, however, by no means clouded in negativity, as the author is at pains to encourage the reader to stand up and support the police and become an active citizen in our country’s ongoing battle against criminal behaviour.

“Dogs bark, but the caravans move on”Reviewed by Garalt MacLiam from Johannesburg on 12 March 2008 90 of 165 people found the following review helpful: “Dogs bark, but the caravans move on” is an old Arab proverb. It may not seem to have direct relevance to Casey Christie’s book Be your own Bodyguard in South Africa. But the point being made is that people hardly notice dogs barking, even their owners. Throughout this “How to …” manual, Christie is saying loud and clear: “Take notice”, “be aware”.
Along the way in this impressively entertaining work he gives any number of tips that could each be a life saver in our presently crime-ridden country. Apropos the dogs for example, how many of us dog owners have been woken in the middle of the night by a barking canine, listened for a while and then relaxed and gone back to sleep. But doing nothing is a no-no. It’s imperative to take cognisance of the tone of the barking or whatever and, taking proper precautions, investigate.
The work is far from preachy and the writer’s quirky sense of humour is often visible.
Take the example of the woman whose innards were being pulled manually from her body, obviously without the benefit of any sedation. At least that’s the impression that Christie and a phalanx of his police cohorts gained when hearing the screams of utmost agony coming from the house they had been called to investigate. After much difficulty, the police gained entry to the premises only to discover that the noise they had heard was the “screaming” of a rather odd man who got overly excited whenever he watched “The Amazing Race”.
That particular tale made the very serious point that everybody should know their property intimately and have a plan so that Security Guards or the police can gain entry in the event of an emergency.
Read, enjoy, learn and, for heavens sake, take heed.

The tide on crime in South Africa is turningReviewed by Mr Warren Rocchi from Joburg, South Africa on 21 May 2008 47 of 102 people found the following review helpful: A hands on guide on how to empower YOURSELF and how not to become a victim. Be Your Own Bodyguard should be regarded as an essential item for every South African household. One can only admire the Author's determination to turn the tide on crime and I salute him as this book will save far many lives than his courageous acts in the SAPS ever will.
